a Vegetarian Tour OF CRETE
Portoclub & Paleologos S.A. Travel have designed this vegetarian tour so their clients can immerse themselves more fully in the culture of Crete and the treasure of its food.
DAY 1. Arrival at the airport of Heraklion. Reception at the airport. Transportation to the villa. Presentation of the program. Rest of the day free to get over the jet lag and dinner at a local restaurant with several vegetarian specialties. Accommodation Crete. (Dinner)
DAY. 2. The Palace of Knossos, a mountain tour, contact local people and join live Cretan music tasting fresh picked and cooked wild greens and vegetables from the near mountains. Accommodation Crete.

(Crete is the island of King Minos, whose name was borrowed to describe the Bronze Age period on the island (3000-1350 B.C.). Today, after arriving at 5:00 AM (!), we get some breakfast and take our bus to the site of Knossos, the mythical home of Minos himself and his "son," the Minotaur)
A Cretan enjoys authentic - simple – fresh – natural – make “easy life” tastes
DAY. 3. COOKING CLASS: Morning we go to an open fruit and vegetable market in the city of Heraklion. Buy all ingredients needed a walk of the city and back to the villa. The cook gives directions and all work together to learn the secrets of the Cretan cuisine. When ready we all join the cooked food. We make at least 10 different dishes.

We'll shop the local markets together in search of local ingredients and prepare traditional Cretan meals in a relaxed atmosphere.
DAY. 4. ICON PAINTING or WOOD SCULPTURING: Pancakes with honey or grapes must syrup cream pie and variety of fresh fruits for breakfast and time to learn the secrets of icon painting. A 5 hours class. Break for lunch at a local restaurant with variety of vegetarian dishes. Early afternoon back to our villa and prepare together a rich dinner with recipes in oven.

DAY. 5. COOKING CLASS: Morning we may go with farm ladies to pick up greens and vegetables straight from the country land or go to an open fruit and vegetable market. In a warm - relaxed atmosphere we work together in an easy to make way and make the dishes wanted. Today the cook is farm house lady. She gives directions the way her mother or grand mother gave her to come to the taste she wants. When ready we all join the cooked food. We make at least 7-8 different dishes.

DAY. 6. CULTURAL / SPOON SWEET and COOKIES MAKING: Kalitsounia – Loukoumades – yogurt with honey and cheese pies for the vegetarian ones and moustokouloura - sweet bread and oil cookies for the vegan ones / mountain herbal tea for breakfast, and leave on a tour to meet local people in their environment working preparing and making cookies traditional way and we all join, prepare and make spoon sweets. Lunch at a nice mountainous spot.

SPOON SWEETS: There are absolutely delicious!! Older times and still in most villages in Crete when someone do a visit to a home the first thing farm house lady do is to offer a spoon sweet and a glass of fresh water. At that time because roads was unpaved and no vehicles, visitors to reach the home they were obliged to walk unpaved roads full of dust. After a long walk they were thirsty and the mouth had an awful taste. What best than a spoon sweet to take this taste away and a glass of fresh water to clean the mouth. There are yummy. There are sweet. Very sweet because have the sweetness of the fruit and sugar.
DAY. 7. CRETAN DANCING & COOKING LESSONS: What better than join a natural – fresh healthy meal accompanying by traditional Cretan music and of course dancing lesson. You will join your meal the way Cretans do. We do it in a friendly relaxed atmosphere (Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner)
DAY. 8. FLIGHT BACK HOME: Last day. Transportation to the airport. END of services (Breakfast)
You will join in and learn to prepare the regional specialties we will serve for dinner.
