The AMURT Children’s Home is located on a 1.8 acre plot at Kiembeni Estate, Bamburi Location, approximately 15 km north of Mombasa. Sharing the same site location with the Children’s Home is a kindergarten and primary school, which serves 450 boys and girls from the local community. The school gives a good foundation in basic learning and the arts; its location is convenient for the children’s home.
The project started in 1989 when its founder, a Taiwanese sister volunteer started with six children in a small house in Likoni. The project was later transferred to Kiembeni Estate, where an estate developer donated a plot to the Ananda Marga Mission for a children’s home and school. A two story home was constructed, and later developed with the help of the local Rotary Club and other well-wishers.
The AMURT Children’s Home—licensed by the Ministry of Home Affairs as a Children’s Charitable Institution, is currently providing care and education for 20 girls. The girls, ages 5 through 23 years, are either orphans, abandoned or from destitute families.
The motto of the Home is“Success for the Girl Child.” The girls experience life in a family setting; they share responsibilities and learn problem-solving. They are not shielded from the normal Kenyan life, but allowed an opportunity todevelop their inherent capacities so they can contribute to the larger community. After primary education, the girls are provided with an education which includes secondary or trade school.
The home is lacto vegetarian, and they try to help the girls in connecting in a positive way with animals. Many children living at the home do not have good role models in terms of respect for animals, and it is unusual for children to have loving relationships with pets even! (They live with a dog named Mini, and a cat named Shika)
